Who is Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock is one the musician that idolized by AR Rahman.
So here is a little bit of him

Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American pianist, bandleader and composer. As part of Miles Davis's "second great quintet", Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the "post-bop" sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Hancock's best-known solo works include "Cantaloupe Island", "Watermelon Man" (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), "Maiden Voyage", "Chameleon", and the singles "I Thought It Was You" and "Rockit". His 2007 tribute album "River: The Joni Letters" won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.
As a member of Soka Gakkai, Hancock is an adherent of the Nichiren school of Mahayana Buddhism.

Rahman race again for Oscar

After bagging a Golden Globe nomination, music maestro A R Rahman is once again in Oscar race with his song If I Rise from 127 Hours making it to the Academy shortlist for the Original Song category.

A total of 41 tunes, including the number that Rahman wrote for Danny Boyle's film, will be judged for Oscar considerations by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Clips featuring the songs will be viewed by the members of the music branch, who will vote to determine the final nominees on January 6, Academy's official website said unveiling the list today.

It is a happy coincident for Rahman, who had a similar golden run in the award circuits in 2009. The 44-year-old singer-composer won his first Golden Globe in 2009 in the Best Original Score category for Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, which also went on to fetch him two Oscar statuettes later.

The musician's song for Couples Retreat had also made it to the shortlist last year but failed to fetch a nomination for him.
Rahman has already received rave reviews for his music in 127 Hours, starring James Franco as real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston, who cut off his arm to escape from beneath a boulder after being trapped for more than five days.

If I Rise is a collaboration between Rahman and American popstar Dido.

Musical Burlesque with its three songs is leading the shortlist while two tunes each from Black Tulip, Country Strong and Despicable Me are in the race.

To be selected for the nominations, a song must score an 8.25 rating or higher and Academy members are known to be choosy when it comes to rounding up the nomination list, which could feature as few as two songs or none.

If only one song receives a 8.25 score, that song and the song with next highest score will be selected as nominees. A maximum of five nominees will be chosen.

This year's shortlist includes Randy Newman for his contribution to the Disney-Pixar toon Toy Story 3 song We Belong Together, You Haven't Seen the Last of Me and Bound to You from Burlesque; I See the Light, Coming Home from Country Strong and There's a Place for Us from Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards will be unveiled January 25 while the award ceremony will take place on February 27 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood

A R Rahman yesterday (11-12-2010) performed at Norway in the Nobel Peace Prize Concert honoring this year's winner Liu Xiaobo, alongside the likes of veterans like Herbie Hancock.

ARR played two tracks from the soundtrack that gave him worldwide recognition, Slumdog Millionaire. First was Escape, the one which had featured some amazing sitar playing by Asad Khan, only yesterday Rahman conjured up a much more haunting improvised version of the track! The second one was Jai Ho, Rahman singing the song alongside Shweta Pandit, Tanvi Shah and Neeti Muhan to a dance performance

Toyota Etios BY ARR

The Toyota Etios is a car developed by Toyota for India's automobile market. It was officially presented in January 2010 in an Auto Show in India. The car will be launched December 2010. The car will be available in hatchback and sedan versions. It will be manufactured in a Banglore plant. It will be the biggest project in India by Toyota.
Engine Capacity and Performance  Toyota Etios will step in India in sedan and hatchback variants. The hatchback will be powered by a 1.1 liter petrol DOHC 8 valve petrol engine while the sedan might be loaded with 1.3 liter DOHC 4 valve petrol mill. The 1.1L petrol engine is supposed to produce 60 bhp whereas the 1.3L petrol engine is believed to make 80 bhp. Both engines will be equipped with dual camshaft and four valves per cylinder which ensure increased power and torque with better fuel efficiency. However, Variable Valve Timing (VVTi) would be missing. This is probably to keep the Toyota Etios price low. Here it is to be mentioned that the company has done enough home work to make the engine powerful and fuel efficient which is supposed to be less due to absence of VVTi. For the same, the engine has been upgraded with latest technologies that ensure less power loss. The engine of Toyota Etios are packed with standard pistons which might come with molybdenum coating. Initially, the car will be available in petrol variant only and diesel engine plans are not in the focus.
Toyota spent Rs 200 crore to develop the Etios and increased the number of Toyota dealers in India to 150.
It will be manufactured in BangaloreKarnataka in 2010 and possibly also in Brazil in 2015.Original Post

127 Hours – Music Review

The album opener by Free Blood, Never Hear Surf Music Again starts off with an interesting arrangement but then moves on to total pandemonium! If you fast forward that noisy one minute or so, things get mildly interesting again. In any case, whether or not you hear Surf music again, chances are you will listen to THIS music again. J And then enters The A R Rahman with Canyon. There is nothing much in the track, just a strings section with probably some keys in the background. A purely situational piece.  But things start picking up with Liberation triad. The first one, Liberation Begins, is again a functional track with pretty much nothing apart from a guitar strumming on a plain loop. But Liberation In A Dream sees Rahman build on that plain loop to create a haunting track. And in Liberation ARR adds a lot more instruments, reaching a wonderful crescendo!
Acid Darbari is a sedate composition in raag Darbari. The continuum fingerboard and the strings section form a very heart-rending combo. The song has a very South-Indian feel though, complete with the shouting sounds in the background. Touch Of The Sun is another minimally orchestrated situational track, and hence would be better viewed than listened to as a track. RIP sounds quite like a requiem as it should, Harshdeep Kaur doing a brilliant job of complementing Rahman’s orchestration that gets superbly pacy towards the end. ARR’s final track, If I Rise comes in the form of a collaboration with Dido, the composer himself doing the vocals alongside the singer. The orchestration here is mesmerizingly serene, highlighted by the motif on what sounds again like the continuum fingerboard. Towards the end there is also a sweet cameo by the Gleehive Children’s Choir from Mumbai.
Of the remaining tracks, three are reworks of yesteryear classics and need no specific comments, wonderful as the originals were. Bill Withers’ 1977 hit Lovely Day, Esther Phillips’ If You Love Me (which was itself a cover of Edith Piaf’s 1950 hit Hymne à l’amour), Plastic Bertrand’s Ca Plane Pour Moi all sound beautiful. Vladimir Ashkenazy’s tribute to Chopin with his version of Nocturne No. 2 is as much an exhibition of Ashkenazy’s talent as it is of the composition’s beauty. The soundtrack ends with Sigur Ros rendering Festival. The nine minute long track starts off on a very un-Sigur Ros-ish note, before shifting gears halfway through to their typical style.
127 Hours surely won’t enjoy the popularity that Danny Boyle-AR Rahman’s Slumdog Millionaire did, but to me this soundtrack rates above Slumdog as it is such albums that show the class act that ARR truly is.
You can see the complete album credits here.

Rahman's FAV TOP 5

Music maestro A R Rahman has listed out five songs, all composed by him, which he considers his best. “Though I like all my songs, these numbers are close to my heart”, he said.

“Narumugaiye… from Iruvar, Ennavale… from Kadhalan, Margazhi Thingal Allava from Sangamam, Kadhal… from Udhaya and Veerapandi Kottaiyile… from Thiruda Thiruda are those five songs”, he said in an interview to a Tamil magazine.

Throwing light on his spiritual side, the Oscar-Grammy winner said, “One can lead his spiritual life in a simple way or in a complex way. I am following what elders have preached. I can now see no difference between joy and sorrow”.

Saying that his aim is to create more musicians, the Mozart of Madras added: “I need huge amount of money to start music schools and to run them. Hollywood projects can help me earn. But I can’t accept all the offers that come my way just for the sake of money”.

What To Expect From Endhiran

So all eyes and are waiting for ‘Endhiran’ the movie and the ears have already got its fodder in the ‘Endhiran’ music that was released on July 31. This Shankar's futuristic film ‘Endhiran: The Robot’ will be a real science-fiction in Tamil after many decades. It is also going to be the biggest Tamil film ever made not just in terms of the money spent on production but also on the line up cast and crew assembled for the film. It stars Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles. Other major stars in the film include Danny Denzongpa, Santhanam and Kalabavan Mani. The film is a trilingual having Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions.

Rajini plays dual roles in ‘Endhiran’. One is a scientist Vaseegaran and the other is a Robot called Chitti. The scientist Rajini creates an android man with artificial intelligence – like that of sixth sense in humans – which looks exactly like him and behaves too like a human to help mankind. But the robot later acquires more human characters. He through technical upgrades and becomes almost human. It falls in love with Aishwarya Rai and writes romantic poems besides doing many other things. Knowing about the extra ordinary intelligence of the Robot the villains lead by Danny Denzongpa try to get control of the Robot. Scientist Rajini then fights to save the Robot falling into the hands of the enemies and destroys the evil forces using the Robot itself.

‘Endhiran’ was a dream of director Shankar. After the stupendous success of ‘Sivaji’ in 2007, Shankar decided to go ahead with the project. The story was developed by Sujatha. He was the one who wrote the finest sci-fi novel ‘En Iniya Iyanthira’. He must have been inspired a lot by the Issac Asimov’s robot story ‘Bicentennial Man’ published in 1975.
If the Tamil film is going to be the biggest ever film who else but the Super Star fit to head the film? The Super Star was signed. For the heroine Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone were considered and Ash was finalized. For the main villain Telugu star Chakravarthi was first considered and later the Bollywood legend Danny Denzongpa was signed. All most all the biggest names in Indian cinema were tossed up to do at least a character.

In January 2008 ‘Endhiran’ was announced to be produced by Ayngaran International along with Eros Labs. The film was growing and the budget was escalating. At one point the international production companies wanted to leave the project and Sun Pictures came to the rescue.  In 2009 ‘Endhiran’ was officially taken over by Sun Pictures.

After Sun Pictures took over, the 200-crore film progressed fast and got completed in July 2010. The first schedule of ‘Endhiran’ commenced with the filming of “Kilimanajro” song featuring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai at the historic location of the Machu Picchu in Peru. The final schedule was fittingly wrapped up at the Sun Studios in Chennai.
The technical crew of ‘Endhiran’ is hand picked by Shankar from all over the world comprising the best of the world.
The script is by late Sujatha, Shankar and Balakumaran. Yuen Woo Ping who designed action scenes for films like The Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Forbidden Kingdom is the stunt co-co-ordinator for ‘Endhiran’. Also our own Peter Hein has done a great job.

Stan Winston Studios which handled visual effects for iconic films like Aliens, Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park took care of the animatronics in the film. Shankar has used animatronics technology, seen in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park trilogy for ‘Endhiran’.

The spectacular effects are made real by the superior combination lighting cinematography of Rathnavelu. Editing is by Anthony and the dance choreography for ‘Endhiran’ is by Raju Sundaram and Claudia Bruckmann.
Industrial Light & Magic that handled the special effects for films like Avatar, Star Wars, and Titanic worked on visual and special effects. Buzz says about 40 per cent of the budget was spent on the special effects.

And for the music there is no comparison. The audio of ‘Endhiran’ was officially released on July 31. The best thing about the songs of ‘Endhiran’ is that they are A Rajini Rahman numbers. In his earlier films for Rajini ARR stayed away from his style of music and blended with the Super Star image more. But in ‘Endhiran’ both high values are independent yet complementing each other.

With ‘Endhiran’, Kalanidhi Maran and Hansraj Saxena of Sun Pictures are debuting as official producers. Sun Pictures has tied up with the reputed international distributors HBO to release ‘Endhiran’ with English subtitles in the West. ‘Endhiran’ is expected to hit world screens with nearly 1500 prints in three languages. In the process for the first time China will screen a Rajini film.

Come September, there’s no territory left untouched by the magnetism of Super Stat Rajinikath. With stunning film like ‘Endhiran’, Kollywood is surely all set to make a mark in world cinema.
