Who is Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock is one the musician that idolized by AR Rahman.
So here is a little bit of him

Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American pianist, bandleader and composer. As part of Miles Davis's "second great quintet", Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the "post-bop" sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Hancock's best-known solo works include "Cantaloupe Island", "Watermelon Man" (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), "Maiden Voyage", "Chameleon", and the singles "I Thought It Was You" and "Rockit". His 2007 tribute album "River: The Joni Letters" won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.
As a member of Soka Gakkai, Hancock is an adherent of the Nichiren school of Mahayana Buddhism.

Rahman race again for Oscar

After bagging a Golden Globe nomination, music maestro A R Rahman is once again in Oscar race with his song If I Rise from 127 Hours making it to the Academy shortlist for the Original Song category.

A total of 41 tunes, including the number that Rahman wrote for Danny Boyle's film, will be judged for Oscar considerations by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Clips featuring the songs will be viewed by the members of the music branch, who will vote to determine the final nominees on January 6, Academy's official website said unveiling the list today.

It is a happy coincident for Rahman, who had a similar golden run in the award circuits in 2009. The 44-year-old singer-composer won his first Golden Globe in 2009 in the Best Original Score category for Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, which also went on to fetch him two Oscar statuettes later.

The musician's song for Couples Retreat had also made it to the shortlist last year but failed to fetch a nomination for him.
Rahman has already received rave reviews for his music in 127 Hours, starring James Franco as real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston, who cut off his arm to escape from beneath a boulder after being trapped for more than five days.

If I Rise is a collaboration between Rahman and American popstar Dido.

Musical Burlesque with its three songs is leading the shortlist while two tunes each from Black Tulip, Country Strong and Despicable Me are in the race.

To be selected for the nominations, a song must score an 8.25 rating or higher and Academy members are known to be choosy when it comes to rounding up the nomination list, which could feature as few as two songs or none.

If only one song receives a 8.25 score, that song and the song with next highest score will be selected as nominees. A maximum of five nominees will be chosen.

This year's shortlist includes Randy Newman for his contribution to the Disney-Pixar toon Toy Story 3 song We Belong Together, You Haven't Seen the Last of Me and Bound to You from Burlesque; I See the Light, Coming Home from Country Strong and There's a Place for Us from Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards will be unveiled January 25 while the award ceremony will take place on February 27 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood

ARR played two tracks from the soundtrack that gave him worldwide recognition, Slumdog Millionaire. First was Escape, the one which had featured some amazing sitar playing by Asad Khan, only yesterday Rahman conjured up a much more haunting improvised version of the track! The second one was Jai Ho, Rahman singing the song alongside Shweta Pandit, Tanvi Shah and Neeti Muhan to a dance performance

Toyota Etios BY ARR

The Toyota Etios is a car developed by Toyota for India's automobile market. It was officially presented in January 2010 in an Auto Show in India. The car will be launched December 2010. The car will be available in hatchback and sedan versions. It will be manufactured in a Banglore plant. It will be the biggest project in India by Toyota.
Engine Capacity and Performance  Toyota Etios will step in India in sedan and hatchback variants. The hatchback will be powered by a 1.1 liter petrol DOHC 8 valve petrol engine while the sedan might be loaded with 1.3 liter DOHC 4 valve petrol mill. The 1.1L petrol engine is supposed to produce 60 bhp whereas the 1.3L petrol engine is believed to make 80 bhp. Both engines will be equipped with dual camshaft and four valves per cylinder which ensure increased power and torque with better fuel efficiency. However, Variable Valve Timing (VVTi) would be missing. This is probably to keep the Toyota Etios price low. Here it is to be mentioned that the company has done enough home work to make the engine powerful and fuel efficient which is supposed to be less due to absence of VVTi. For the same, the engine has been upgraded with latest technologies that ensure less power loss. The engine of Toyota Etios are packed with standard pistons which might come with molybdenum coating. Initially, the car will be available in petrol variant only and diesel engine plans are not in the focus.
Toyota spent Rs 200 crore to develop the Etios and increased the number of Toyota dealers in India to 150.
It will be manufactured in BangaloreKarnataka in 2010 and possibly also in Brazil in 2015.Original Post
